Photographing Objects for VR

You can capture real-world objects using a video, film, or digital camera. Objects are shot as sequence of photos, using a turntable or object rig to ensure proper rotation of the camera to all possible viewpoints you want are captured.

Here are some of the issues you should consider before you begin to photograph your objects.

  • Backdrop

It is best to use a backdrop when photographing objects. This helps create the illusion that the object is “floating in space” and that the user is picking up and manipulating the object, rather than just walking around it.

  • Supporting the object

Place the object on a support such as a turntable.

Variations in color and exposure during the capture process may cause the object or the background to "jitter", which means unwanted motion of your object or its background in your final object movie.

  • Selecting and setting up the camera

You can use either digital still or video cameras for Object VR Photography. Using a video camera will give you greater control of automation but will not have the resolution of a digital still camera.

  • Ordering frames

The capture of images is done in order from the top to bottom (columns) of the object in repetative bands (rows) of images. Select a name for each image that reflects the sequence in which the images will be viewed. This eliminates the need to reorder or rename frames afterward. Note: Most software applications put frames in alphanumeric order. An example of a section of a single band movie is shown below:
